“Melasma – Is there a cure for my skin condition?”

One of our Facebook fans recently asked, “Melasma – Is there a cure for my skin condition?”

This has proven to be a popular discussion topic so we thought we’d “archive” some related questions and our responses here.

Question:
“Melasma – Is there a cure for my skin condition? Staying out of the sun is not realistic for me and I do wear sun protection on my face…..just wondering if there are any newer treatments available?”

Remedy:
The latest treatment is Cosmelan MD, a much improved version of the previous pigment-lightening Cosmelan. This formulation is only available in physician offices and involves a professionally applied mask and home product. Dr. Emery’s clients have generally seen 80+% improvement within even a few weeks of the professional application. Of course, you’ll need to continue to protect your skin with sunscreen after the treatment, but you’ll see results and be able to be outdoors and active!

Follow-up question:
“Can you give me an idea for the cost of Cosmelan treatment? Is this a one time treatment or are multiple treatments required?”

Remedy:
The cost is $800 which includes an on-site treatment followed by a 6 month at-home maintenance regimen. Most of our clients also take advantage of a second complimentary on-site touch up treatment. The bulk of the improvement (80+%) is within a few weeks of the first professional treatment and we target what remains with the second complimentary treatment and the at home treatments. As one of the busiest centers in Southern California we’ve seen many amazing results and our clients have been thrilled. As always, call to schedule a free consultation so we can ensure it is the best treatment for your situation.

Another fan asked:
“What do u think of Triluma?”

Dr. Emery responed:
Tri-Luma is a topical cream, available by prescription only, used to treat melasma (hormonally-induced excess pigment in the skin). In my opinion it is one of the more effective topical treatments, but it can take eight weeks of use before you see it make a difference, and the benefits often plateau before all the pigment is gone.

Another fan asked a follow-up question:
“Do you have another recommendation?”

Remedy:
For single product topical treatments Triluma is definitely one of the best. To get improved results (if Triluma hasn’t worked for you or you’ve reached a treatment plateau) you usually need to go with or complete product regimen like the Obaji system or ideally a treatment/product regimen like Cosmelan MD.
